House of Nigredo Publishing was founded in honour of Shathespleen and revives work that lives in the margins, or “refuses to behave”. In due time it will release more “lost fragments” from the archives. It is not seeking submissions… yet.
Founded in honour of Shathespleen, this imprint revives the work of those who dwell in the margins; the thoughts, the voices, the pages that “refuse to behave.” In due time the House will release more “lost fragments” from the archive. We are not yet seeking submissions… but the gates may open.
Little is known about the man called Shathespleen. He appears in the faint margins of history, a shadowy 16th‑century figure, part pamphleteer, part mystic, known to a few but cited by none.
Rumour places him in London in the 1590s, disappearing after what some records call the Incident at Mortlake. Others propose he died in exile, or simply stopped writing. Conflicting dates, vanishing manuscripts, and misplaced printing plates all contribute to the enigma.
Legend asserts he founded the enigmatic club, House of Nigredo, a society of underground writers, rogue printers, and dissidents of ink who met under candlelight and produced texts that officialdom preferred never existed.
What remains of him is this house. And perhaps the whisper of something important lost.
